### Engineering Manager
**Location:** Fully Remote (US-based)
**Reports to:** CTO / VP Engineering
### The Opportunity
Most startups burn cash to find a market, at Symmetric, we've spent the last
few years winning it. We've been profitable from Year 1, remain employee-owned
and doubled in 2025 with line of sight to repeat that growth in 2026.
Our product is the data engine behind the world's most sophisticated
healthcare systems β 17 of the Gartner Top 25 supply chains already rely on
Symmetric. We provide cutting-edge solutions that streamline procurement, item
master data management, and improve efficiency across healthcare systems.
We have a fully remote team that's making a big impact on the healthcare
supply chain by working closely with enterprises (health systems, hospitals,
consulting firms, etc.), regulatory agencies and industry groups.
### Role Overview
We are seeking an Engineering Manager to own people management across our
engineering organization. You will manage 8 engineers working across four pods
(Integrations, Platform/App, Data Infrastructure, and DevSecOps), partnering
with senior Technical Leads who set domain direction. Your focus is making
engineers effective: running sprint processes, conducting 1:1s and performance
reviews, driving hiring, and allocating engineering capacity across pods based
on business need.
This is a people leadership role, not a player-coach position. You will not
write production code. Technical direction stays with our IC Technical Leads.
Your job is to make the engineering organization run: hiring the right people,
developing them, removing blockers, and ensuring work ships on a predictable
cadence. To help gain context on what the engineers are working through and
stay connected on a technical level, you will help develop some small features
here and there.
### Key Responsibilities
### People Management & Team Leadership
* Manage and develop ~15 engineers across four pods (Integrations, Platform/App, Data, DevSecOps), fostering a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
* Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and support career development for team members.
* Drive hiring and onboarding of new engineering talent to scale the team effectively.
* Ensure the team follows best practices for coding, testing, and deployment.
### Technical Execution & Delivery
* Oversee the day-to-day execution of the team, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality, scalable features and services.
* Partner with Product Management and Technical Leads to define technical requirements, plan sprints, and manage the backlog.
* Partner with Technical Leads to translate engineering priorities into sprint plans and resource allocation decisions. Ensure code review standards are maintained without performing reviews yourself.
### Cross-Functional Collaboration
* Ensure web application and data pipeline engineering teams are coordinated on delivery and execution.
* Act as a key technical liaison for internal stakeholders, including Customer Success, Implementation, and Sales.
### Qualifications
### Required
* 2+ years of experience managing an engineering team, with a preference for managing across multiple teams or domains.
* 4+ years of experience as a software engineer, architecting and building scalable backend or data systems.
* Proven ability to mentor and grow engineers at all levels.
* Experience with Python, SQL, JavaScript, cloud environments, and modern CI/CD practices.
* Strong communication skills with the ability to articulate technical vision and decisions to both technical and non-technical audiences.
### Preferred
* Experience in healthcare IT, data platforms, or supply chain technology.
* Prior experience managing teams working with complex data modeling and ETL/ELT pipelines.
* Familiarity with the challenges of data quality, governance, and reconciliation.
* Experience operating within an agile development framework.
### What Success Looks Like
* **30 days:** Established strong relationships with all direct reports and key cross-functional partners; understand the current sprint process, code architecture, and technical roadmap.
* **60 days:** Own sprint planning and execution across all pods; the team is shipping on a predictable cadence; completed initial feedback sessions with all direct reports.
* **90 days:** Addressed a key technical debt or operational bottleneck and developed a clear career growth plan with each direct report.
* **1 year:** The team is operating as a high-performing, autonomous unit; successfully hired and onboarded new engineers as needed; contributed significantly to the technical strategy and scaling of our core platform.
### What We Offer
* Competitive salary with performance-based bonuses
* Comprehensive benefits: 100% covered health, dental, vision, 401K matching, and flex PTO
* Meaningful work with real-world impact on the healthcare supply chain
* Growth potential at a profitable, high-growth, founder-led startup
* Autonomy and ownership β we trust our team members to be the experts in their craft
* US-based remote with scheduled team in-person meetings
